Investing in Stocks & College Grants help?

I’ve heard that if you have money in the bank or in your own retirement fund, the government won’t give you as much in college grants so you have to use this money. If I invest in stocks, will it affect college grants? If I stop investing before I go to college will they still see that I’ve invested and taking that as an income to decrease college grants?
I was going to start my own retirement plan with my own money(around 500-1000$ to start). I just turned 16 and I’m a junior in High School so I have a few years before college.
